Redesigning Massport.com was a MASSive project involving dozens of stakeholders, as well as usability testing with actual travelers. The result is a fresh and modern transportation website that embraces web best practices and truly moves the Massachusetts Port Authority ahead of the curve.

The Goal

The main goal was and always will be to best serve their customers, however, in this case customers may range from harried passengers looking for information about weather delays to industrious vendors looking for opportunities to engage with the Port Authority. Our goal was to design one efficient website to serve all.

Our Solution

The majority of the traffic to Massport.com concerns Logan Airport, but the website also serves the Port of Boston as well as other regional airports. It was critical that we consider varied audience pathways and not only deliver the best end-user experience, but also a cogent content organization. To achieve this, we applied and tested user-centered design principles to ensure that we were offering the right kinds of online services and functionality in the right places, while promoting the Authority’s content and messaging goals.

Mobile First

A mobile-first design approach was indispensable, based on an in depth analytics review. The result—customers can now navigate terminal maps and find flight status comfortably right on their phones.

“While we did follow a mobile-first design approach, we were careful to consider how every design decision affected all screen sizes.”

Complex Integrations

The site integrates with over 17 different distributed systems and feeds both internally and externally including flight status, parking, and operational systems.

6 sites in 1!

We created an adaptive design scheme with a modular back-end, accommodating the varying needs of each unique Massport property within one seamless user experience.

Accessibility & Compliance Tested

The Massport site has been designed and tested for WCAG 2.0 AA, ADA and section 508-compliance. This means users who navigate the web via screen readers or are vision impaired, as well as users across all modern web browsers and devices, can have a consistent experience throughout the website.
