Playwrights Horizons is the birthplace of American classics like Grey Gardens and Driving Miss Daisy. In a city rich with cultural offerings, the 42-year-old institution needed a site to reflect their unique mission.

The Goal

Their old website was text-heavy, with tiny images instead of their captivating show art. Playwrights Horizons needed a better showcase for their productions and a flexible CMS to support dynamic labs, residencies, and educational programs.

Our Solution

We designed with a light touch that allows their posters to shine. Behind the scenes, a searchable production history serves as their new archive for shows, playwrights, and actors.

  • – User Experience Design
  • – Visual Design
  • – Django Development

The homepage greets users with grand, unmistakable show art.

The logo color changes on each page to match the production. (And it's all controlled in the CMS.)

As a fun insider touch, we incorporated a photo of their actual building exterior as the background.

In the production history, you can search for anything: your favorite show, playwright—even David Schwimmer.
